Proposed Imposition of Additional Duties on Imports of Hot Rolled Coils into Malaysia (CD/04/2011)

Head Office, KL

The Government of Malaysia has initiated an investigation into claims that imports of hot rolled coils under the HS heading 7208 and 7211 into Malaysia are causing serious injury to Malaysian iron and steel producers. The list of affected products and their HS codes can be obtained from the FMM website at old.fmm.org.my – Members Club/ Circulars /Customs Desk.

Upon completion of the investigation and in the event it is proven that the local producers of iron and steel are adversely affected, companies importing hot rolled coils into Malaysia will be subjected to an initial safeguard duty rate of 35% in addition to existing import duties.

A public hearing on the investigation will be held from June 28-30, 2011 and FMM will have the opportunity to highlight concerns relating to the imposition of the high import duty during the public hearing. In order to prepare for effective representation at the hearing, members that would be affected by the initiation of the additional safeguard duties are urged to complete and return the attached Feedback Form to FMM Head Office (Fax: 03-62741266/7288) by June 20, 2011.
